Attracted by the rugged hills and spectacular vistas, famed "Hoosier
Group" painter T.C. Steele (1847-1926) was the first artist to
settle in Brown County, just after the turn of the 20th century.
Visit Steele's historic studio and home, the House of the Singing
Winds, at the T.C. Steele State
Historic Site.
Many of Steele's impressionist landscape paintings,
still lifes and portraits are displayed for all to enjoy.
After touring the buildings, explore 211 acres of restored
historic gardens, five wooded hiking trails and the Selma Steele
State Nature Preserve.
Our museum gift shop has
wonderful posters, books and gift items, but the paintings are held
in trust for all to enjoy, and are not for sale.
The T.C. Steele State Historic Site is located at 4220 T.C. Steele Road,
halfway between Nashville and Bloomington. Turn south at Belmont,
and drive 1 1/2 miles up T.C. Steele Road to the stone arches at
our front gate.
Open spring through fall, Tuesday through Saturday, 9am to 5pm, Sunday
from 1 to 5pm, closed Mondays,
most holidays and in the winter. Call (812) 988-2785, fax (812)
