Functional and decorative pottery in terra cotta stoneware

Judy and Tom Prichard opened Oak Grove Pottery Studio and Gallery in 2005, after moving to Nashville in 2003. They spent their first two years in Brown County building their studio and then their home, with their own hands.
Most of Judy’s work is produced with a self-formulated terra cotta stoneware. Much of her work is functional pottery for use in the home. Judy greatly enjoys doing intricate carvings on her pottery of leaves and flowers.

Judy spent three years studying ceramics in Sydney, Australia, in addition to her previous schooling in the United States at Indiana/Purdue University Ft. Wayne. She exhibited in several ceramics exhibitions in the Sydney area as well as having photos of her work published in an Australia wide ceramics magazine.

Artist Statement:

“I create each piece for the recipient. As I produce a piece, I strive to know the person who will receive it. I hope they will know when they hold the piece they choose to buy or receive as a gift, it was made just for them.”

Wander through our herb, vegetable and flower garden, our home gardens and see the garden art of other artists and our own acorn and basket birdhouses. Also, don't forget to take a walk down the path to the pond to feed the fish.

Functional stoneware and sawdust-fired pottery

Tom began his pottery experience in 1997 following Judy taking her ceramics courses in Ft. Wayne. Shortly after, they set up a pottery studio and began producing individual pieces and small production pottery sold at local shows and galleries.

Tom continued off and on with his pottery whenever time and his regular job would allow, including his three-year residence in Sydney, Australia. While there, Tom participated in several pottery workshops. After the completion of their studio and home in October of 2006, Tom began working with Judy in Oak Grove Pottery full time. His early efforts focused on glaze formulation and glazing while he continued to develop new functional pottery designs on the wheel.

In addition to traditional glazed stoneware pottery, Tom has found a love in “sawdust-fired” pottery. This primitive method results in pottery that is born from smoke and fire. Just as snowflakes and people, no two will be exactly alike.

Artist Statement:

“I continue to strive for pottery which is pleasing in both form and finish. Finished pottery should give the owner a sense that what they are holding is unique and a part of the soul of the artist is embedded in the clay and glaze.”
