Watercolors, Mixed Media, GourdsI have been painting watercolors for over 35 years. I began by studying summers with Harry Wood at Arizona State in Tempe while teaching on the Hopi Indian Reservation during the school year. In addition I studied with Cliff Segerblom of University of Nevada during two different whitewater rafting trips on the Green and Upper Colorado Rivers. Later, in the Peace Corps in Jamaica, I found that selling my artwork brought in money needed to purchase books for pre-school children and their teachers who had little or no access to literature. I returned to the U.S, completed a degree in library science, and began working as a children’s librarian and storyteller. My interest in watercolors was accelerated and broadened by studying illustrations and illustrators who were creating amazing works of art for children’s picture books. Since retiring in 2007, I have experimented in mixed media, particularly handmade and printed papers. Recently I have found an exciting challenge in creating images and vessels from dried gourds. My life, my art and my inspiration are connected to all aspects of nature. My storytelling as well connects me to the colors, rhythms, and patterns of many cultures. I am drawn through nature and through stories to the fantasy of those worlds. It is my search for the magic that I am constantly trying to express through my work. Our home is located partway up Persimmon Ridge in the midst of woods that lead to Yellowwood State Forest. In a mix of sunny and shaded open spaces, you can find our gardens scattered around the house, the old hand-hewn log storage building, and our pond. We enjoy growing vegetables as well as a variety of flowers that include both perennials and annuals. In our travels we look for and occasionally find garden accents to bring home. We hope you enjoy our small sanctuary in the woods.
