Ridgeview Arts - Metal art and scrimshawRon Newton works in metal, primarily copper. His work is abstract as well as realistic depiction of things in our world. He has taken a few art-related classes but is primarily self-taught. He is retired from the V.A. where he worked about 30 years. He now focuses his attention on his art. Ron has been experimenting with various art forms for most of his adult life. About 30 years ago, he stumbled onto scrimshaw and has been working in this medium ever since. About 10 years ago, a friend showed Ron how to make a copper flower. Since then, his work has expanded into other metals. His process includes brazing, welding, cutting, hammering and various other ways to attach parts. Works may be realistic or abstract. In addition to metal work, Ron is an expert at scrimshaw. He teaches scrimshaw classes at J.C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina and has written a book called "Learning How to Scrimshaw." Ron is a member of the Brown County Craft Gallery, where his work can be seen throughout the year.
